It’s supposed to be rainy here in Vermont this weekend, so this seemed like the perfect amigurumi to share with everyone. Just take a look at this cutie and you will instantly feel better even if it’s gloomy and rainy wherever you are.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Amigurumi measures approximately 4”/10cm high

YARN: Caron International’s Simply Soft: #0004 Blueberry (A) and #9727 Black (B)

CROCHET HOOK: One size US F-5 (3.75 mm), or size to obtain gauge.

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS: Yarn needle, Two 9mm safety eyes, Fiberfill stuffing
Stitch marker

GAUGE: 20 sts and 24 rows sc = 4″/10 cm. Exact gauge is not critical for this project, stitching should be tight.

STITCHES USED: Chain (ch), Single crochet (sc)

SPECIAL TERMS: sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (two loops on hook), insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all three loops on hook.

NOTE: Do not join rounds. Place a marker in the last stitch of round and move up as rounds progress.

DIRECTIONS:

With A, ch 2.
Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join—6 sc. Place marker in last stitch.
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around—12 sc.
Round 3: *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around—18 sc.
Round 4: *Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around—24 sc.
Round 5: *Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around—30 sc.
Round 6: Sc in each sc around.
Round 7: *Sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around—36 sc.

Rounds 16-17: Sc in each sc around. Place eyes on raindrop. With yarn needle and B, back st mouth on raindrop as pictured. Stuff the amigurumi and continue to stuff as work progresses.
Round 18: *Sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sc; repeat from * around—30 sc.
Rounds 19-20: Sc in each sc around.
Round 21: *Sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sc; repeat from * around—24 sc.
Round 22: Sc in each sc around.
Round 23: *Sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sc; repeat from * around—18 sc.
Round 24: Sc in each sc around.
Round 25: *Sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next sc; repeat from * around—12 sc.

MATERIALS:

1 ball, Stitch.Rock.Love Sheep(ish) for Caron, in color: White(ish)

1 US F (4.25mm) crochet hook

Tapestry needle

6, 1 1/2″ Styrofoam balls

Scraps of black craft felt

Craft glue and white sewing pin (Ghost #3 only)

Spooky Tree (Found at craft stores or learn how to make your own here.)

ABBREVIATIONS:

Sl st=Slip Stitch

Ch=Chain

Rnd=Round

Sc=single crochet

St=stitch

Sk=skip

Sc2tog= single crochet two stitches together

 

DIRECTIONS:

Ghost #1 (Make 2)
Ch 2, join round with a sl st.

Rnd 1: Ch1, sc [6 times] in center. Join with a sl st. (7 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch1, sc in base of same st as ch. 2sc in EACH st around. Join with a sl st. (14 sts)

Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 2. (28 sts.)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in next st and each st around. Join with a sl st.

Rnds 5-8: Repeat rnd 4.

INSERT STYROFOAM BALL

Rnd 9: Ch 1, *Sc2tog. Repeat from * to end/ Join with a sl st. (14 sts.)

Rnd 10: Repeat rnd 4.

Rnd 11-12: Repeat rnd 2.

Rnd 13-16: Repeat rnd 4.

Rnd 17: *Ch 7, sk 2, sl st, ch 10, sk 4, sl st, ch 12, st st. Repeat from * , ending with a sl st in the base of 1st ch. Tie off.

Ghost #2 (Make 2)

Rows 1-8: Work as for Ghost #1.

INSERT STYROFOAM BALL

Rows 9-16: Ch 1, sc in next st and each st around. Join with a sl st.

(Periodically stretch out ghost “body” while you’re working, so it flares out a bit).

Tie off.

Ghost #2

Ghost #3 (Make 2)

Ch 200. Turn.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in 2nd ch from hook and every ch to end. Tie off, leaving tail.

Assembly: : Pin end of crocheted strip at the top of Styrofoam ball. Put glue on several inches of the wrong side of the strip and begin wrapping around ball, leaving a small gap for the eye area to peek through. Once you get to the bottom portion of the ball (before it rounds off), stop gluing. With a tapestry needle and yarn, tack strip loosely (intentionally letting some of them show) to itself as you continue wrapping to create “body”. Leave tails dangling and add a few loose strands randomly. Separate plies of yarn tales for unraveled look.

Ghost #3

 

FINISHING (all ghosts)

Hanging loop: With yarn and hook, pick up stitch off-center of the top of the ghost head. Ch 12, sl st in same spot that you picked up 1st st. Tie off.

Weave in ends.

Cut out felt eyes and mouth and glue them onto appropriate ghosts. Hang on your spooky tree.

Knit Vase Cozies


Flowers aren’t the only way to add a pop of color to otherwise plain-Jane vases. With just a bit of yarn (Might I suggest, Sheep(ish)?) and an evening in front of the TV, you can whip up a craftier solution! These vase sleeves are worked up in the current pattern-craze du jour (see my Ode-to Missoni Blanket): the chevron stitch. Make them in your favorite colors, then change ‘em out to fit the season… or your mood!

Freddie Frog

This week’s amigurumi is Freddie Frog.  Isn’t he cute? But he looks like he could use a friend, so why not make a couple of these cute little guys? Better yet, create an entire colony, each one in a different color!

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Amigurumi measures approximately 3”/7.5cm tall

 

YARN: Caron International’s Simply Soft (100% Acrylic; 6oz/170g, 315yds/288m):

#9607 Limelight (A); #0001 Vanilla (B); #9727 Black (C)

 

CROCHET HOOK: One size US B-1 (2.25mm) & One size US C-2 (2.75mm).

 

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS: Yarn needle, Fiberfill stuffing, Stitch marker

 

GAUGE: Exact gauge is not critical for this project, stitching should be tight.

 

STITCHES USED: Chain (ch), Half double crochet (hdc), Single crochet (sc), Slip stitch (slip st)

 

SPECIAL TERMS: sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (two loops on hook), insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all three loops on hook.

 

To Change Color: Work sc until 2 loops remain on hook, drop first color, yarn over with 2nd color, draw through last 2 loops on hook.

Round 3: Sc in each st around. Drop B, join up A.

Rounds 4-6: With A, sc in each st around. Stuff eye.

Round 7: [Sc2tog over next 2 sts] 6 times—6 sts. Fasten off leaving a long sewing length. With yarn needle and sewing length, weave through final rnd of sts, pull tight and secure. Sew 1 eye on each side of head toward front as pictured.

Hind Leg (make 2)

Cut 2 yds of A and split. With smaller hook and A, leaving a long tail, ch 4, join with a slip st to form a ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in ring and over tail, do not join, pull tail to close center ring—6 sc. Place marker in last stitch.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around—12 sc.

Round 3: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around—18 sc.

Rounds 4-5: Sc in each st around

Round 6: *Sc in next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around—12 sc. Stuff leg lightly and continue to stuff as work progresses.

Round 7: Sc in each st around.

Round 8: *Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around—9 sc.

Rounds 9-21: Sc in each st around. Finish stuffing.

Row 22: Flatten end of leg, working through double thickness, work 5 sc evenly spaced across end of leg—5 sc.

Row 11: Flatten end of leg, working through double thickness, work 5 sc evenly space across end of leg—5 sc.

Row 12 (toes): *Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in last ch, sc in next st in row 11, sc in next st; repeat from * once, ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in last ch, sc in next st in row 11. Fasten off.

 

FINISHING: With yarn needle and sewing length, sew front legs to front of body in line with eyes and even with knees of hind legs. With yarn needle and C, straight st 2 nostrils and back st a frown on face as pictured.

Warm Up With a Cup of Coffee!

The last couple of nights it has started to cool down, hinting at the change of season that will soon be here.  And what better way to warm up on a chilly morning than a nice cup of coffee.  Tracie Barrett created this adorable coffee mug amigurumi complete with a smiling face and coffee (or hot chocolate if you prefer) to warm your insides. It’s a super fast project you can whip up in no time!

Rounds 26-28: Working through both loops of sts, sc in each sc around. Join with sl st in next st. Fasten off. 

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Roll in hands to evenly distribute stuffing.

8 balls Stitch.Rock.Love Sheep(ish) for Caron (70% Acrylic/30% Wool ; 167 yds/153 m) yarn in colors: (A) Magenta(ish), (B) Chartreuse(ish), (C) Pumpkin(ish), (D) Robin’s Egg(ish), (E) Black(ish), (F) Taupe(ish), (G) Red(ish), (H) Turquoise(ish)

Size US J hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Tapestry Needle

13 sts x 6 rows= 4” (10 cm) in patt stitch


Special Stitch:

3DCtog: Decrease 3 stitches in to one by double-crocheting them together.

Directions

With Color A, Ch 130.

Row 1: DC in 4th ch from hook, * DC in each of 5 ch, 3DCtog over next 3 ch, DC in each of 5 ch, [DC, ch, DC] in next ch, repeat from *, ending with 2 DC in last ch. Turn.

Row 2: 3ch, DC in front loop of first DC, * DC in front loop of each of 5 dc, 3DCtog, over front loops of next 3 DC, DC in front loop of each of 5 DC, [DC, ch, DC] in ch sp, repeat from *, ending with 2 DC in 3rd of 3 ch. Turn.

Row 3: As for Row 2, but working in the BACK loops of stitches.

Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until blanket measures 36” (90 cm) and switching to Colors B, C, D, E, F, G & H every 4 rows for the first half of blanket, and every 2 rows for the 2nd half, ending with 4 rows of Color A. Use Color Stripe Chart as a guide.

Tie off.

Just Clowning Around

 “Clowning around knows no age limit.”  Just take it from the Chicago Tribune, who reported just that this week in an article about a volunteer clown group that includes several senior-aged members.   So take a break from the normal routine and crochet up these cute little clown amigurumis designed by Mary Pueschner.

Ruffle

Cut 2 ft of F and split.

Round 1: With right side facing, using smaller hook, join F with sl st in remaining loop of any st in round 8 of body, ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in same st, 5 dc in remaining loop of each st around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3—60 dc. Fasten off.

Shoe (make 2)

Cut 2 ft of G and split. With G, using larger hook, leaving a long tail, ch 5.

Round 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, 3 sc in last ch, working across opposite side of foundation ch, sc in next 2 ch, join with sl st in first sc—10 sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in 4 sts, join with sl st in first sc—14 sc.

Round 4: Sc in each st around.

Round 5: *Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * 2 times, sc in next 2 sts—11 sc.

Round 6-9: Sc in each st around. Stuff lightly. At end of row 9, fold shoe in half.

Row 10: Match sts across last round, working through double thickness, sc in each st across. Fasten off leaving a long sewing length. With yarn needle and sewing length, sew shoes to bottom of body as pictured.

FINISHING:  With yarn needle and G, straight st 2 crosses for eyes; with F, back st a mouth as pictured. Glue or sew on one pompom to face for nose and two pompoms to front of body as pictured. Weave in ends.

#0001 Vanilla (A); #9605 Mango (B); #9607 Limelight (C); #9748 Rubine Red (D); #9747 Iris (E)

CROCHET HOOK: One size US C-2 (2.75mm).

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS: Yarn needle, Fiberfill stuffing, Stitch marker, One 1/4”/6mm red pompom for nose

GAUGE: Exact gauge is not critical for this project, stitching should be tight.

STITCHES USED: Chain (ch), Double crochet (dc), Single crochet (sc), Slip stitch (slip st)

SPECIAL TERMS: sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (two loops on hook), insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all three loops on hook.

NOTES: All yarn used is split into 2 strands of 2 plies each. Use 2 plies of yarn throughout. Do not join rounds. Place a marker in the last stitch of round and move up as rounds progress.

DIRECTIONS:

Head

Cut 3 yds of A and split. With A, leaving a long tail, ch 4, join with a slip st to form a ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in ring and over tail, do not join, pull tail to close center ring—6 sc. Place marker in last stitch.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around—12 sc.

Round 3: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around—18 sc.

Round 4: *Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around—24 sc.

Rounds 5-9: Sc in each st around.

Round 10: *Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around—18 sc. Stuff the amigurumi and continue to stuff as work progresses.

Round 11: *Sc in next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around—12 sc.

Round 12: *Sc in next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around—8 sc.

Round 13: Sc in each st around. Fasten off leaving a long sewing length. With yarn needle and sewing length, weave through final rnd of sts, pull tight and secure.

Ear (make 2)

With A, ch 2.

Round 1: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join—8 sc. Place marker in last stitch.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around—16 sc.

Work now progresses in a row.

Row 3: Fold ear in half, working through double thickness, working through back loops only, matching sts, sc in each sc in each of next 8 sts—8 sc. Fasten off leaving a long sewing length. With yarn needle and sewing length, sew ears to side of head as pictured.

Ruffle

Cut 1 yd of B and split. With B, leaving a long sewing length, ch 10, join with a slip st to form a ring.

Round 1: 16 sc in ring and over tail, do not join, pull tail to close center ring—6 sc. Place marker in last stitch.

Round 2: *Sc in next st, 3 dc in next st; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in next sc. Fasten off. With yarn needle and sewing length, sew to bottom of head.

Hair: Cut 1 yd of C and split. Cut eight 1”/2.5cm lengths and two 4”/10cm lengths of C. Center four 1”/2.5cm lengths across one 4”/10cm length. Tie longer length in a knot around shorter lengths. With longer length, sew hair to head over one ear. Repeat hair on other side of head.

FINISHING: Sew or glue pompom to center front of head for nose as pictured. With yarn needle and D, back st mouth under nose as pictured. With yarn needle and E, back st star shaped eyes ­­on face as pictured.
