This week’s amigurumi is Freddie Frog. Isn’t he cute? But he looks like he could use a friend, so why not make a couple of these cute little guys? Better yet, create an entire colony, each one in a different color!

YARN: Caron International’s Simply Soft (100% Acrylic; 6oz/170g, 315yds/288m):
#9607 Limelight (A); #0001 Vanilla (B); #9727 Black (C)
CROCHET HOOK: One size US B-1 (2.25mm) & One size US C-2 (2.75mm).
ADDITIONAL MATERIALS: Yarn needle, Fiberfill stuffing, Stitch marker
GAUGE: Exact gauge is not critical for this project, stitching should be tight.
STITCHES USED: Chain (ch), Half double crochet (hdc), Single crochet (sc), Slip stitch (slip st)
SPECIAL TERMS: sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (two loops on hook), insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all three loops on hook.
To Change Color: Work sc until 2 loops remain on hook, drop first color, yarn over with 2nd color, draw through last 2 loops on hook.
NOTES: All yarn used is split into 2 strands of 2 plies each. Use 2 plies of yarn throughout. Do not join rounds. Place a marker in the last stitch of round and move up as rounds progress.
DIRECTIONS
Body
Cut 4 yds of A and split. With larger hook and A, leaving a long tail, ch 2.
Round 1: 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join—7 sc. Place marker in last stitch.
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around—14 sc.
Round 3: *Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * once, sc in next 4 sts—16 sc.
Rounds 4-5: Sc in each st around.
Round 6: *Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around—20 sc.
Rounds 7-13: Sc in each st around.
Round 14: *Sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around—16 sc.
Round 15: *Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around—12 sc. Stuff the amigurumi and continue to stuff as work progresses.
Round 16: [Sc2tog over next 2 sts] 6 times—6 sts. Fasten off leaving a long sewing length. With yarn needle and sewing length, weave through final rnd of sts, pull tight and secure.
Eye (make 2)
Cut 1 yd each of B and C and split. With smaller hook and C, ch 2.
Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join—6 sc. Place marker in last stitch. Drop C, join B
Round 2: With B, 2 sc in each st around—12 sc.
Round 3: Sc in each st around. Drop B, join up A.
Rounds 4-6: With A, sc in each st around. Stuff eye.
Round 7: [Sc2tog over next 2 sts] 6 times—6 sts. Fasten off leaving a long sewing length. With yarn needle and sewing length, weave through final rnd of sts, pull tight and secure. Sew 1 eye on each side of head toward front as pictured.
Hind Leg (make 2)
Cut 2 yds of A and split. With smaller hook and A, leaving a long tail, ch 4, join with a slip st to form a ring.
Round 1: 6 sc in ring and over tail, do not join, pull tail to close center ring—6 sc. Place marker in last stitch.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around—12 sc.
Round 3: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around—18 sc.
Rounds 4-5: Sc in each st around
Round 6: *Sc in next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around—12 sc. Stuff leg lightly and continue to stuff as work progresses.
Round 7: Sc in each st around.
Round 8: *Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts; repeat from * around—9 sc.
Rounds 9-21: Sc in each st around. Finish stuffing.
Row 22: Flatten end of leg, working through double thickness, work 5 sc evenly spaced across end of leg—5 sc.
Row 23 (toes): Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in last ch, sc in next st in row 22, sc in next st, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in next st in row 22, sc In next st, ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in last ch, sc in next st in row 22. Fasten off. Fold each leg in half and sew to sides of body as pictured.
Front Leg (make 2)
Cut 2 yds of A and split. With smaller hook and A, leaving a long tail, ch 2.
Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join—6 sc. Place marker in last stitch.
Round 2: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around—9 sc.
Rounds 3-10: Sc in each st around. Stuff leg lightly.
Row 11: Flatten end of leg, working through double thickness, work 5 sc evenly space across end of leg—5 sc.
Row 12 (toes): *Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in last ch, sc in next st in row 11, sc in next st; repeat from * once, ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in last ch, sc in next st in row 11. Fasten off.
FINISHING: With yarn needle and sewing length, sew front legs to front of body in line with eyes and even with knees of hind legs. With yarn needle and C, straight st 2 nostrils and back st a frown on face as pictured.
