MOVIE MONDAY: Mildred Pierce, Part 1

Last night HBO debuted their version of the classic film, Mildred Pierce. Not quite a remake of the original (1945, starring Joan Crawford), director Todd Haynes takes the more in-depth approach into the life of a working mother in the 30′s and the tumultuous relationship with her sociopathically-ungrateful daughter.

Academy award winning actresses; whip-smart script; fantastic costuming–this one is a must-see! In the meantime, here’s a glimpse at how knit & crochet were represented in the 1st parts, of the 5-part miniseries.

Movie Monday (Music Video Edition): Farmer’s Daughter

Today’s Movie Monday selection was sent to me from my friend Luke over at Buy.Caron.com. It’s not technically a movie but in the way that many music videos are, it’s certainly cinematic in its own right.

You may remember from the contestant-inspired, crocheted Lilly Earrings I posted a pattern for a year ago that we Caron peeps are a sucker for crafty, American Idol-ers. That said, you can imagine my delight of finding out that one of the greatest Idol finalists, singer-songwriter Crystal Bowersox, is a knitter! Check her out, showing her stitching skills in the video for her song, Farmer’s Daughter. Oh, and props to Crystal & the director for figuring out how to use knitting as the common thread (Thanks, I’ll be here all night!) through the video’s storyline. Enjoy!

Movie Monday: It’s Kind of a Funny Story

It’s Kind of a Funny Story is actually, well, a great story. A confused teen checks himself into a psychiatric hospital, and finds his way through the eyes of the mentally astray.

Oh, and thinking I wouldn’t notice all of the knitwear onscreen–well, that’s just crazy.

Movie Monday: Sylvia

Since a collection of Sylvia Plath’s poems is one of the only books of poetry I own, I was really interested in watching the biopic of her life. Dark, both visually and topically, Sylvia, used knitwear to illustrate yet another layer of the color of one poet’s perpetual despair.

Over the weekend Surviving Christmas came on TBS as we were decorating our tree. I definitely wouldn’t call it a holiday classic (man, 2003-2004 was a rough movie-making time for Ben Affleck), but it does have a great cast and plenty o’ featured knitwear!

Movie Monday (Web Show Edition): Dr. Horrible

This week’s pick comes from Buy.Caron.com‘s Luke Limbrunner, who e-mailed to remind me about the convergence of two entertainment fantasmas, Neil Patrick Harris and Joss Whedon. Ladies and gentlemen, they call it: Dr. Horrible! It’s available for your viewing pleasure on the web; it’s part fan-boy/part fan-kick; one of the characters wears knitwear. Need I say more?
So hey, there’s already a sing-along happening, so why not start a Dr. Horrible, knit-along? Wait, why not design a Dr. Horrible scarf (the Dr. Who scarf can be its accessory nemesis), for said knit-along? Don’t tempt me, people, I’ll do it! Oh, I (might) do it…
